Biohacking pioneer flags common nasal spray ingredient as potential anti-aging tool

Dave Asprey, known as the father of biohacking, drew attention to a Northeastern University analysis that evaluated over six thousand drugs for impact on the hallmarks of aging. The study singled out oxymetazoline, the decongestant in Afrin and similar products, for its potential to enhance cell-to-cell communication, a process that deteriorates with age and affects immunity, muscle and bone health. Researchers are now investigating how the compound influences cellular signaling at Harvard, but no human experiments have been conducted.
Asprey joked about “snorting Afrin for longevity” but warned it is a bad idea and reiterated that any breakthrough would likely come from an existing, shelf-stable drug. The authors stressed the work is an early roadmap, not a cure, and similar anti-aging interest surrounds aspirin, which appears to affect multiple aging pathways. Both compounds remain untested in people for longevity benefits.
Why it matters
If proven effective, a widely available over-the-counter drug could become a low-cost strategy to slow age-related decline.
