Biontech to shut three German sites, affecting about 1,800 workers

Biontech confirmed that its three German locations - Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, Marburg in Hesse and Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg - will be closed after months of trying to find purchasers. The closures will affect around 1,800 employees, with shutdown dates set for the end of 2028 in Idar-Oberstein, early 2028 in Marburg and the end of 2027 in Tübingen. The firm blamed a difficult market and investment environment for the failed sales and said it has negotiated additional severance terms with the corporate works council, though specifics remain undisclosed.
The Marburg plant previously produced Covid-19 mRNA vaccines and plasmid DNA, while Idar-Oberstein focused on early-stage therapeutics and Tübingen housed the former Curevac site, a deal announced in summer 2025 that never completed. Biontech had earlier explained the closures as part of a shift toward oncology and cost-saving measures, after a drop in Covid-19 vaccine demand and ongoing losses.
