Bipartisan Bill Aims to Digitize Social Security Survivor Benefit Applications

A new bipartisan proposal, the Survivor Benefits Application Modernization Act, was introduced by Representatives Sharice Davids and Gabe Evans to modernize the way families claim Social Security survivor benefits. The legislation would compel the Social Security Administration to develop an online self-scheduling portal for appointments within 180 days of enactment and to enable complete digital filing of survivor benefit applications within a year.

The bill estimates that hundreds of thousands of Americans could benefit annually, given that roughly 5.8 million people receive survivor benefits, averaging $1,626 per month. Critics note that some older beneficiaries may struggle with the new technology, while supporters argue the changes will reduce administrative delays for grieving families. The proposal now heads to committee review before any votes in the House or Senate.
