Bird flu drives up feather costs, inflating badminton shuttle prices in Australia
Australian badminton clubs face sharply higher shuttlecock costs as H5 bird flu reduces the supply of goose and duck feathers.
The spread of H5 bird flu across Asia has led to massive culls of geese and ducks, dramatically shrinking the pool of feathers needed for premium badminton shuttlecocks. As a result, Australian clubs are seeing the cost of a dozen Yonex AS-30 shuttles more than double, from $30-$35 to over $70, according to Badminton Australia CEO Tjitte Weistra. Great Southern Badminton Association chair Michelle Watson reports quarterly shuttle expenses of about $3,000, forcing clubs to raise fees to maintain quality equipment.
Western Australian players are hit especially hard, with retailer prices up 30-50% due to higher raw feather and freight costs, noted Metamorph Shuttle director Ryan Zengyuan. While synthetic shuttles are being explored as a cheaper option, many players argue they lack the performance of feathered ones. The price surge also reflects rising freight, oil prices, and competition for cork used in shuttle heads.
