Birmingham Airport unveils £2bn plan to double passenger capacity

Birmingham Airport announced a £2bn expansion that would use existing runway capacity and upgrade facilities to handle up to 30 million passengers and generate thousands of jobs.

Birmingham Airport has launched a £2bn expansion blueprint that seeks to double its passenger traffic to around 30 million by exploiting current runway capacity and delivering extensive upgrades to terminals, baggage systems, aircraft stands and road links. Chief executive Nick Barton outlined a 15-year timeline, with construction potentially kicking off in 2027, and highlighted the need for a stable tax and regulatory environment.

The plan follows a record 2025 with over 13 million passengers and projects the creation of more than 50,000 jobs, of which 3,800 would be based at the airport. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed government support, while West Midlands mayor Richard Parker praised the ambition for its regional economic boost. An eight-week public consultation invites feedback through online submissions, mail or attendance at 20 events beginning on 16 October in Hampton on Arden.

Why it matters

The project could transform regional transport, spur economic growth and create thousands of jobs in the West Midlands.
