Birmingham couple sentenced to life for torturing vulnerable man to death

Kenneth Newton, 57, and his partner Melanie James, 63, were each handed life imprisonment for the murder of Rubin Blount, a vulnerable 28-year-old man. Court evidence showed the couple repeatedly beat, starved and humiliated Blount, leaving him to lie in his own urine and forcing him to eat from trash. Medical examination revealed severe dehydration, pneumonia, multiple rib and spine fractures, burns and other injuries.

Blount suffered cardiac arrest upon hospital admission and died three days later. The judge condemned the abuse as an “abject failure” to help a man in pain, noting the defendants’ position of trust and the deliberate nature of the cruelty. Victims’ families described the loss as devastating and called for compassion and dignity for vulnerable adults.
