BJP and Shiv Sena clash in Ulhasnagar over alleged Kalani influence and nominated seats

The BJP has broken its civic alliance with Shiv Sena in Ulhasnagar, accusing the Sena of letting Kalani-linked figures into its ranks and disputing the allocation of nominated corporators.

Tensions between the BJP and Shiv Sena in Ulhasnagar escalated after the BJP alleged that individuals associated with the Kalani criminal network joined the Sena, skewing the balance of power in the municipal corporation. The dispute centers on the appointment of seven nominated corporators, where the BJP, despite having 37 elected corporators, received only two seats while the Sena secured five. Consequently, the BJP’s local unit announced it will sit in opposition and will not assist Shiv Sena MP Dr Shrikant Shinde in upcoming election work.

Shiv Sena leader Kamlesh Nikam responded by labeling state BJP president Ravindra Chavan a “member of the Manchekar gang” and called for his ouster. Both parties have threatened court challenges, and police had to intervene after threats were made against Nikam’s residence. The final decision on whether the alliance ends at the municipal level rests with the BJP’s senior leadership.

Why it matters

The split threatens the stability of the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition in Maharashtra and could affect future elections.
