BJP faction clash over community feast injures four in East Kolkata
A dispute between rival BJP groups over a banquet in Anandapur turned violent on Saturday night, leaving four people hurt.
Late Saturday night in Anandapur, Kolkata, a disagreement between two BJP factions erupted into a brawl after a large community banquet was held on the grounds. The feast, organized by the party’s Kasba Assembly unit, offered mutton, katla fish and giant freshwater prawns to over a thousand attendees. Arun Bishoyi, the local BJP mandal president, alleged that the gathering was not sanctioned and that its funding came from extorting businessmen and jewellery shops, questioning how the party could afford such a lavish menu.
The opposing faction, associated with South Kolkata district committee member Saraswati Sarkar, rejected these claims. Violence later spilled outside Anandapur Police Station, resulting in four people being injured. Minister Dilip Ghosh expressed uncertainty about the event’s ownership, and authorities have begun a probe into the incident.
Why it matters
The clash shows internal tensions within a major political party and raises concerns about illegal fundraising tactics.
