Black Voter Support for Democrats Slips Ahead of Crucial Midterms

Analysts warn that African-American backing for the Democratic Party is eroding as key Senate races approach.

The 2024 midterm elections could see Black voters playing a decisive role, yet their loyalty to the Democratic Party appears to be weakening. Pew Research data indicate that support for the party’s vice-presidential nominee dropped from the low 90s to around 80 percent in the last presidential race, while President Donald Trump attracted a record share of Black voters, especially younger men. In Michigan, Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, an Egyptian-American physician, is projected to receive roughly 67 percent of the Black vote, down from the 87 percent his predecessor secured.

Critics accuse his campaign of prioritizing issues like the Gaza conflict over local concerns, a narrative amplified by his Republican opponent’s ads. Parallel races in Texas and Florida also hinge on Black voter turnout, with Democratic candidates James Talarico and Angie Nixon facing challenges in consolidating that base.

Why it matters

Shifts in Black voter allegiance could determine control of the Senate and shape national policy direction.
