Blakeman says Hochul is avoiding debate in New York governor's race
Republican nominee Bruce Blakeman claims Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul has turned down multiple debate invitations as the New York gubernatorial contest heads toward November.
Bruce Blakeman, the Republican candidate for New York governor and Nassau County executive, accused incumbent Kathy Hochul of refusing to debate him despite offers from PIX11 and one outlet. He warned that voters are burdened by the nation’s highest taxes, soaring electricity bills, and an exodus of residents, and urged Hochul to step onto a debate stage. Hochul’s campaign responded that she intends to join at least one debate and will hold Blakeman accountable on issues like costs and safety.
Participation in a publicly financed debate is mandatory only for candidates who accept state matching funds; Blakeman has opted in, while Hochul, who holds a $21 million war chest, has not. The New York State Public Campaign Finance Board said a debate would be cancelled if only one candidate appears. In the 2022 race, Hochul debated once against Republican Lee Zeldin, then EPA Administrator.
