Blaze in Nea Ionia cafe destroys three-storey building and forces resident evacuations
A fire that erupted early Monday in a cafe on Kastamonis Street in Nea Ionia engulfed the three-storey building, destroying the restaurant and prompting firefighters to rescue residents.
An alarm sounded at 04:00 Monday, prompting the fire department to rush to a cafe on the ground floor of a three-storey building on Kastamonis Street in Nea Ionia. The fire rapidly spread from the restaurant to the upper floors, razing the cafe and inflicting extensive damage on all apartments. Residents reported hearing a loud roar and, in one case, an explosion before seeing flames outside their windows; within about thirty minutes the blaze had almost entirely engulfed the structure.
Some occupants fled through the main entrance, while others sought refuge on the roof and were later lowered to safety by firefighters. Smoke continued to billow from balconies and interior spaces long after the flames were controlled. Investigators from the fire department’s forensic unit are examining possible triggers, including the presence of flammable supplies or a gas cylinder, and note that the same cafe was the site of a fatal shooting three years earlier.
Why it matters
The incident underscores fire safety challenges in mixed-use buildings and the importance of thorough investigations to prevent future tragedies.
