Blizzard's World of Warcraft Forever beta draws massive player interest and streaming surge
The World of Warcraft: Forever beta opened at BlizzCon, attracting long queues and a sharp rise in Twitch viewership. Senior designer Josh Greenfield described the response as unprecedented in his career.
At BlizzCon, Blizzard unveiled the beta for World of Warcraft: Forever, an alternate storyline that expands the original world rather than advancing the plot. Access to the beta is limited to subscribers who also buy premium packs, such as the Epic pack or the Warcraft Forever Collection, which grant the optional Skyborne elf race. The launch generated exceptionally long login queues, with some players waiting many minutes, and Twitch viewership for the beta was roughly three times higher than for the launch of the prior expansion, Midnight.
Senior game designer Josh Greenfield said the scale of participation was the most intense he has witnessed in his 17-year tenure at Blizzard, and longtime WoW commentator Asmongold celebrated the return, noting the inclusion of Classic Plus content. The beta will run ahead of the full release, which will require only a monthly subscription once launched.
Why it matters
The beta shows strong demand for new WoW content, influencing Blizzard's revenue and the game's future direction.
