Blizzard workers ratify inaugural union contracts covering 1,900 staff
Around 1,900 Blizzard employees represented by the Communications Workers of America have approved their first union contracts after two years of negotiations.
Blizzard Entertainment employees represented by the Communications Workers of America have voted to ratify their first union contracts, covering about 1,900 workers across various game studios and support units. After roughly two years of bargaining, the deals deliver wage increases, a three-day in-office hybrid workweek, and a guaranteed four-week severance package irrespective of seniority. Additional clauses set up grievance mechanisms, remote-work and disability accommodations, and obligate Blizzard to discuss and negotiate the deployment of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
The contracts also grant laid-off staff the right to be recalled to any open position within a Blizzard bargaining unit for up to 14 months after a layoff notice. Simon Hedrick, a member of the Overwatch bargaining committee, said the agreement could spark positive change throughout the gaming sector. The unionization effort has involved workers from titles such as World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, Hearthstone and Warcraft Rumble, as well as platform, technology, story, franchise development and quality-assurance teams.
