Bloomberg Philanthropies pledges $1 billion to make Johns Hopkins graduate tuition free for many

Bloomberg Philanthropies donated $1 billion to Johns Hopkins University, allowing medical students from families earning under $300,000 to attend tuition-free and extending living-cost aid to families earning up to $175,000.

In July 2024 Bloomberg Philanthropies contributed $1 billion to Johns Hopkins University to broaden graduate financial aid. The centerpiece is a tuition-free policy for medical students whose families earn less than $300,000 annually, and a combined tuition-and-living-cost package for those from families earning up to $175,000. Johns Hopkins estimates that about 95% of American families fall below the $300,000 threshold and 85% below $175,000, meaning nearly two-thirds of new medical students could benefit.

The donation also funds need-based scholarships and fully funded PhD fellowships in nursing, public health, engineering, business, arts, sciences and the upcoming School of Government and Policy. President Ron Daniels highlighted the aim of removing financial barriers to advanced education, while Michael one outlet cited his own experience with federal scholarships as motivation. The endowment is intended to support these programs in perpetuity.

Why it matters

The donation could dramatically lower debt for future doctors and graduate students, widening access to high-cost professional training.
