Bloomington North defense dominates scrimmage as freshman QB gets ample reps

In a two-hour controlled scrimmage at Dennis O. Martin Field, new coach Andy Harding emphasized defensive pressure while giving freshman quarterback Fisher Pugh extensive playing time.

At Dennis O. Martin Field on Friday, Bloomington North conducted a two-hour scrimmage against Southport under first-year head coach Andy Harding. The defensive unit set an aggressive tone, restricting Southport to only a couple of first downs and no points in the opening 15-play series, with senior end Gunner Pugh, linebacker Anthony Wrancher and others delivering key tackles and an interception by Jackson Gill. Offensively, freshman quarterback Fisher Pugh received the bulk of his reps, completing two touchdown throws to Nate Walker and RaShon English and scoring on a scramble after a fumbled snap, while the Cougars' running backs Carter Matthews and Brayden Johnson provided solid blocking.

Backup Tristan Stogdill exited with an apparent arm injury, and Blake Davis was held out as a precaution after a minor injury early in the session. Harding praised the linebackers for their positioning and the defensive line for backfield disruption, emphasizing a commitment to sound, fundamental defense. Bloomington North’s next game is a home opener against rival Bloomington South on Aug. 21.

Why it matters

The scrimmage shows how Bloomington North's new coach is shaping the team's defensive identity and developing its freshman quarterback.
