BMW to Recall Nearly 28,000 Luxury Cars Over Driveshaft Issue That May Cause Rollaway

BMW will recall 27,720 vehicles from its 5, 7 and 8 Series because a driveshaft-rear differential flaw could let the cars roll away.

BMW has filed a recall covering 27,720 luxury vehicles after detecting a driveshaft-to-rear-differential connection that can wear excessively over time. The recall includes 18,150 5-Series cars built from 2021 to 2023, 7,372 8-Series models from 2022 to 2026, and 2,198 750e xDrive plug-in hybrids produced between 2024 and 2026. The wear may lead to loss of power to the rear wheels, increasing the chance of a crash or the vehicle rolling away if the parking brake is not engaged.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records show no related injuries or crashes to date. BMW will send notification letters to owners by Oct. 2, and dealerships are instructed to perform the repair at no charge, using either an adhesive seal or a full driveshaft and rear differential replacement.

Why it matters

The recall addresses a safety defect that could cause vehicles to move unintentionally, affecting thousands of drivers.
