Bob Chesney pushes openness and beach bonding for UCLA Bruins in Irvine

Bob Chesney, the new head coach of UCLA football, is building a culture of transparency by opening the program to the public, starting with the Spring Game at the Rose Bowl and extending to an official practice at Irvine Great Park where families and alumni could observe. He praised the enthusiastic response from the surrounding community, especially in Newport Beach. After a demanding training session under the Irvine sun, Chesney scheduled a beachside cookout at Newport Rib Company for the players’ off day.

The team will also spend a week away from Westwood at the Great Park to simulate an away-game environment and share hotel accommodations. Additionally, Chesney clarified that former NFL quarterback Derek Carr was recruited partly because of his friendship with UCLA general manager Darrick Yray and his residence near the training facilities, allowing him to contribute during spring practice and home games.
