Body-cam video shows 6-year-old shooter taunting police after stealing mom's gun
Footage from the 2023 Richneck Elementary School shooting reveals the 6-year-old suspect cursing officers and admitting he took the firearm from his mother.
In January 2023, a six-year-old student opened fire at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, wounding teacher Abby Zwerner. Recently released body-camera footage from Officer Brian Torrez documents the aftermath inside the classroom. The child, whose identity is concealed, repeatedly curses at a school employee and the responding officers, shouting profanities and challenging them.
He then admits the weapon was taken from his mother, saying, "My mom had that! I stole that from my mom!" Police are seen restraining him with a bear hug while the employee holds him. The shooting led to a civil trial in which a jury awarded Zwerner $10 million, finding the school had ignored prior warnings about the child's access to a gun.
