Body of American climber recovered after Broad Peak avalanche in Pakistan
Search volunteers in Pakistan have located the remains of Mallory Geis, the last missing member of a ten-person climbing party swept by an avalanche on Broad Peak.
A volunteer team in Pakistan, under the Alpine Club of Pakistan, recovered the remains of American mountaineer Mallory Geis on Friday, marking the end of a search that started on July 31. Geis was the final missing participant of a ten-person international expedition that was hit by an avalanche on Broad Peak, a mountain in the Karakoram range. The climb, led by famed Nepal-born climber Nirmal Purja, represented Geis' inaugural attempt at an 8,000-meter summit in Pakistan.
Broad Peak is notorious for avalanches, falling ice, rock, and rapidly changing weather, which often endanger expeditions. The recovery was confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, providing closure to the families involved. The incident underscores the persistent risks faced by mountaineers in northern Pakistan.
