Bogdanka's profit plunges to 5 million złoty as revenues fall sharply
Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka reported net profit of only 5 million złoty in the first half of 2026, a dramatic drop from the previous year, while revenue fell to 1.36 billion złoty.
Bogdanka posted a net profit of just 5 million złoty for the first half of 2026, representing a steep decline from the prior year's earnings. The mine increased coal output by about 13 percent to roughly 4.1 million tonnes, yet its revenue dropped from 1.52 billion to 1.36 billion złoty, driven by weaker contract prices and rising operational expenses, including wage pressures. Last year's profit had been inflated by a one-off 145 million złoty compensation for flood damage, without which it would have been 119 million złoty.
Union chairman Jacek Świrszcz said cash reserves have dwindled from 600 million to 80 million złoty, threatening investment and new mining fronts. Workers are demanding renegotiation of trade agreements and dialogue with ministries, opposing cost cuts that could affect staff. The company claims to be pursuing optimisation measures and expanding sales to external buyers, boosting external sales to about 886 thousand tonnes.
Why it matters
The sharp profit decline threatens Bogdanka's financial stability and could affect Poland's coal supply and energy security.
