Bolojan calls mass salary lawsuits against judges immoral and warns of fiscal strain

Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said generating thousands of salary-related lawsuits against judges is immoral and that the state lacks the funds to settle the resulting claims.

Ilie Bolojan described the practice of initiating numerous salary-related lawsuits against magistrates as immoral, especially when the courts hearing them also handle comparable cases. He highlighted that the total judgments correspond to a significant portion of the national economy, a burden the state cannot meet on a day-to-day basis. The interim government lacks the legal capacity to make a budgetary correction, leaving it unable to execute the payments.

Bolojan warned that any penalties incurred will not be the fault of one outlet administration. He called on the future government to stagger the debts and swiftly pass a law on unified remuneration. He also linked the delay in legislation to the loss of European recovery funds, citing a prior court ruling that upheld a claim of several billion lei against the government and finance ministry.

Why it matters

The dispute threatens Romania's fiscal stability and could affect its access to EU recovery funds.
