Bomb cyclone drives record gusts across Finland, creating a temporary emergency in Lapland

A bomb cyclone has produced powerful wind gusts throughout Finland, with especially severe conditions prompting an emergency alert in Lapland.

A rapidly deepening low-pressure system, known as a bomb cyclone, struck the British Isles on Saturday and has since unleashed strong wind gusts across Finland. Janika Takala of the Finnish Meteorological Institute reported gusts over 25 m/s on Åland, more than 21 m/s in Hanko and Russarö, and 21.4 m/s in Espoo on Monday morning. While the strongest winds have moved on, western coastal regions could still experience gusts up to 17 m/s. The weather pattern also brings unusually warm temperatures, with Lapland seeing daytime highs of 8-9 °C and the southern parts reaching 10-12 °C, while nighttime cooling remains modest.

A temporary emergency has been declared in Lapland due to the lingering effects of the storm. Overall, the week is expected to clear up with only scattered showers remaining.

Why it matters

The storm's extreme winds and warm spell affect travel, infrastructure and daily life across Finland, especially in the north.
