Bombay High Court cautions Vijay Mallya over social media posting of court affidavit
The Bombay High Court warned Vijay Mallya not to share pending court documents on social media, saying such actions undermine the court’s effectiveness.
During a hearing on Tuesday, the Bombay High Court reprimanded businessman Vijay Mallya for posting an Enforcement Directorate affidavit on his social media accounts before it was officially submitted to the court. Justice Milind Jadhav, citing the need to preserve judicial efficacy, asked senior counsel Amit Desai to warn Mallya against such behavior. The ED’s lawyer, Ashish Mehta, explained that the affidavit was filed on September 8 and served to Mallya’s lawyers the same day, yet Mallya shared it that evening.
The court postponed the case to October 13 and ordered the State Bank of India to file its reply. Mallya, who left India in 2016 and faces money-laundering accusations linked to the collapse of Kingfisher Airlines, continues to argue that asset recovery should end the criminal proceedings, a claim the ED rejects. The hearing will consider the lenders’ response to his request for case closure.
