Bordeaux police probe upgraded to aggravated attempted homicide after station fire
The Bordeaux prosecutor has expanded the investigation of a police station fire into aggravated attempted homicide charges against three officers present during the attack.
After a calm student protest in Bordeaux escalated, dozens of masked participants attacked the central police precinct, setting fire to an antenna and launching mortar-type projectiles. Three police officers were present at the time: two inside the building and one outside. The officer outside was pursued by the crowd, and the others attempted to exit but were forced to stay as trash cans were set ablaze in front of the entrance, causing the fire to spread over part of the façade before being contained.
The Bordeaux prosecutor's office has broadened the original inquiry to include aggravated attempts at voluntary homicide against the three officers, a charge that carries a possible life sentence. The escalation followed numerous thrown objects and tear-gas grenades used by police in response. The investigation now treats the episode as a serious violent assault on law-enforcement personnel.
Why it matters
The case raises concerns about public safety and the severity of charges when police are targeted during protests.
