Border Patrol cuts down historic “grandmother tree” amid Arizona protest

Border agents removed a centuries-old cottonwood dubbed the “grandmother tree” in Lochiel, ending a 70-day sit-in against the border wall.

A prolonged protest against the Trump administration’s border wall in southern Arizona concluded when Border Patrol agents raided a camp near Lochiel and cut down a centuries-old cottonwood known to activists as the “grandmother tree.” The sit-in had lasted over 70 days after three neighboring trees were previously removed to make way for the wall. Video from the scene shows the tree being felled while agents stand nearby, and the tree was only a few meters from the incomplete structure.

Authorities reported multiple arrests during the raid. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency later announced that all four cottonwood trees slated for removal in the San Rafael Valley have been taken down, citing environmental concerns but also linking illegal crossings to ecological damage.

Why it matters

The removal highlights tensions between border-security projects and local environmental activism.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Both camps report the felling of the historic cottonwood and the protest arrests, but left-leaning coverage stresses the activists' defense of the “grandmother” trees and injuries, while centrist coverage highlights the Border Patrol raid, the protest’s duration, and CBP’s environmental justification.

LEFT

Frames the incident as a clash over protecting historic “grandmother” trees, emphasizing activist occupation, detentions and injuries, and the wall’s costly funding.

CENTER

Frames the incident as a Border Patrol operation ending a long-standing protest, stressing the raid, the tree’s historic status, and CBP’s environmental and security rationale.

The left emphasises

  • protect four towering cottonwood trees referred to as “grandmother” trees
  • detention of at least ten protesters, several injured
  • $47 billion congressional appropriation for the wall
