Border Patrol finds 31 migrants packed into a modified truck in California desert

Border Patrol agents patrolling the harsh desert terrain near Ocotillo, Imperial County, intercepted a modified utility truck that was packed with 31 migrants, a case described as a suspected human-smuggling operation. After the discovery, the driver abandoned the vehicle and attempted to cross back into Mexico, where he was subsequently arrested by Mexican law-enforcement officials. The 31 individuals were detained by U.S. authorities, and the incident highlights the dangerous conditions of the Imperial Valley corridor, where summer heat can top 120 degrees.

The El Centro Sector, which oversees roughly 70 miles of the border in this region, operates four stations in El Centro, Calexico, Indio and Riverside. Although overall border apprehensions have fallen, similar smuggling attempts continue, including a recent boat rescue off San Clemente Island and a mountain rescue in the Jacumba area. The latest case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by both migrants and border agents in this unforgiving landscape.
