Border officers in Giurgiu stopped a vehicle from Moldova and found gold-colored jewelry concealed inside two rear-seat pillows.
Police from the Giurgiu border sector, together with territorial service personnel, conducted a stop on DN 5 early Tuesday morning. The vehicle, bearing Moldovan registration, was driven by a 37-year-old Moldovan woman en route between Turkey and the Republic of Moldova. Inspectors found two pillows on the rear bench seat, inside which a quantity of gold-colored jewelry was hidden.
The driver was unable to produce any paperwork proving the origin of the goods. Authorities confiscated the items for expert analysis and initiated a criminal investigation for illegal collection, possession, transport, storage or sale of goods that should be under customs control. Legal measures will follow once the inquiry is completed.
