Boston mother accused of lying to EMTs about daughter's fatal fentanyl overdose
Dayanna Familia was charged after police say she told EMTs her 4-year-old daughter turned blue from drinking milk, while the child actually died of fentanyl poisoning.
Boston authorities arrested Dayanna Familia, 35, in connection with the August 17 death of her four-year-old daughter, Liyanna, in the 200 block of Fuller Street, Dorchester. Police and EMS arrived as the child turned blue and attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital. Prosecutors claim Familia told the EMTs the child had been drinking milk and may have encountered a roach trap, despite evidence that fentanyl caused the fatal poisoning.
A search warrant executed at the residence recovered fentanyl. At her arraignment, Familia entered a not-guilty plea; her attorney requested $10,000 bail, but the judge set bail at $250,000. She is scheduled to appear in court again on November 20.
Why it matters
The case highlights the seriousness of fentanyl exposure in children and raises concerns about false statements to emergency personnel.
