Boxer Joe Cordina acquitted of assault after court finds self-defence justified
A Cardiff magistrates' court judge cleared Joe Cordina of assault, ruling his single punch was proportionate self-defence.
In a trial at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, Judge Charlotte Murphy found boxer Joe Cordina not guilty of assault on Jamie O’Brien. The judge detailed how O’Brien shoulder-barged Cordina, prompting Cordina to deliver a single, controlled punch that she deemed proportionate. CCTV evidence confirmed the sequence of events, and the judge accepted Cordina’s testimony that he repeatedly pushed O’Brien while on the floor to keep him away.
She rejected any suggestion of retaliation, noting Cordina’s public profile and frequent interactions with fans. The Crown’s case failed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to the dismissal of the charge. Cordina’s lawyer, Nadeem Majid, thanked supporters and said the boxer will now focus on his family and upcoming boxing commitments.
