Boxing Coach Louis Meehan Killed in Targeted Shooting Outside Sydney Community Centre

Boxing coach Louis Meehan was fatally shot in the car park of a community centre in Punchbowl, Sydney, in a targeted attack.

On Wednesday evening, 32-year-old boxing coach Louis Meehan was shot repeatedly in the car park of a community centre in Punchbowl, a suburb of Sydney’s south-west, and died on site. Police recovered a stolen silver Lexus that fled the scene and was later found in Bass Hill, and investigators believe a single shooter carried out the attack. Early inquiries suggest the motive may be connected to outlaw motorcycle gang activity, though officials say it appears unrelated to recent spate of shootings.

Acting Superintendent Dean Johnstone called the act callous and highlighted that about a dozen children were inside the centre at the time, but no one else was harmed. Community members, including fellow boxers, posted tributes on Meehan’s social media, while state politicians referenced the killing amid a recent government crackdown on organised crime.

Why it matters

The killing underscores concerns about gang-related violence threatening public spaces in Sydney.
