BrahMos Aerospace targets 2027 prototype and 1,500-km range for next-gen missile

BrahMos Aerospace says its next-generation BrahMos-NG missile will have a prototype ready by 2027-28 and aims for a future 1,500-km strike range.

Dr Joshi told ANI that BrahMos Aerospace is advancing the BrahMos-NG missile, targeting a prototype by 2027-28 and incorporating greater domestic content, advanced materials and new technologies. The air-launched variant is being pitched to foreign operators of the Sukhoi-30 platform, with several nations expressing interest. Range-extension trials from land, sea and air have already shown performance beyond the original 290-km envelope, and a 1,500-km range is outlined as a future, conceptual goal.

Over the next five years, the firm will complete current orders for the Indian Armed Forces, accelerate R&D through dedicated "Tech-bricks," and broaden its industrial base from a handful of partners to about 45 suppliers. Recent defence procurement includes a contract for BrahMos fire-control systems and launchers for Indian Navy ships, emphasizing at least 68% indigenous content. The missile’s combat use in Operation Sindoor and its role in defence exports underscore its strategic importance for India.

Why it matters

The development signals a major boost to India's indigenous missile capability and export potential.
