Brazilian federal police execute new search warrants against ex-Governor Claudio Castro
Federal police in Brazil obtained search warrants linked to former Rio governor Claudio Castro as part of a fresh probe into alleged financial and regulatory misconduct.
On Friday, Brazil's federal police carried out search warrants connected to former Rio de Janeiro governor Claudio Castro, according to two sources. The operation targets alleged fraudulent and reckless management, money laundering, tax evasion, capital flight, market manipulation and violations of economic order within the fuel-marketing sector. Investigators are also scrutinizing the questionable issuance of environmental licences for a refinery, which ignored technical guidance, and the related laundering of proceeds.
Castro, who resigned in March, was previously implicated in a May-time tax-evasion case that forced the privately owned refinery Refit to cease operations. An electoral court subsequently prohibited him from seeking office for eight years over abuse of political and economic power and illicit fundraising in the 2022 election. The police statement did not name any suspects.
