Brazilian university rector killed by falling debris at Arizona historic site

Rogério Renato Mateucci, rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, died after roofing material was blown onto him during a tour of Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Rogério Renato Mateucci, who has served as rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná since 2022, was killed during a guided tour of the historic Taliesin West estate in Scottsdale, Arizona. Strong winds reaching 32 mph caused roofing material to break free and strike him, leading to his death at the scene. Local police are investigating the accident and have indicated no criminal intent.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, which maintains the property, posted a statement of deep sympathy and temporarily closed the site to visitors. In response, the Brazilian university suspended classes at all three campuses and scheduled a memorial Mass for the following Monday. The institution reflected on the event as a profound reminder of mortality and the need to cherish core values.
