Bread Ahead told to vacate Borough Market over its growing success

Bread Ahead announced that Borough Market management has asked the bakery to leave, citing its increasing success and international expansion.

Bread Ahead revealed that Borough Market has asked the bakery to vacate its original stall, arguing the shop’s success and expanding global franchise are incompatible with the market’s policies. Founder Matthew Jones posted on Instagram that the decision was unexpected, especially after the bakery’s rise from a modest stall to an internationally recognised brand known for items such as the crème brûlée doughnut and blackcurrant-mascarpone-cheesecake doughnut.

He emphasized that Bread Ahead remains founder-led and not a faceless chain, and he urged the market to celebrate rather than punish its growth. The timing coincides with the brand’s planned launch of a flagship location in New York this November, alongside existing outlets in Dubai, Bangkok and Saudi Arabia. The case mirrors a tenancy dispute involving Maria’s Market Café, a vendor at the market since the 1960s. A Borough Market spokesperson said relationships with traders are important but could not discuss the particulars of the Bread Ahead case. Jones has appealed to the public for support while negotiations continue.

Why it matters

The dispute highlights how popular vendors can face eviction from historic markets despite commercial success.
