Breakthrough DNA method identifies 1,654th victim of 2001 World Trade Center attack
A new forensic DNA technique helped officials identify an adult woman, bringing the total identified victims of the 2001 World Trade Center attack to 1,654.
Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jason Graham announced that an adult woman, whose name remains private at her family's request, was identified through forensic investigative genetic genealogy, marking the 1,654th identification from the 2001 World Trade Center disaster. The FIGG approach blends DNA analysis with genealogical research and involved collaboration between the city’s medical examiner office and the NYPD’s Investigate Genetic Genealogy Squad.
The technique also enabled confirmation of remains for three other victims recently uncovered. Officials described the identification effort as a sacred promise to families. Mayor Zohram Mamdani reiterated the city's dedication to continue seeking answers for all remaining cases.
