Brevard deputy and woman killed in head-on I-95 crash while responding to shooting

A Brevard County sheriff’s deputy and a 26-year-old woman died in a head-on collision on I-95 after the deputy was responding to a shooting near Titusville.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey identified Deputy Kevin Morris, 55, as one of the victims of a fatal head-on collision on Interstate 95 near Titusville. Morris was responding to a shooting that had taken place earlier in Mims when a 26-year-old woman, whose name was not released, made a U-turn and drove south in the northbound lanes, colliding with Morris’s SUV around 11 p.m. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the reason for the U-turn is unknown and a toxicology examination will be performed on the woman’s driver. The Florida Highway Patrol will examine the vehicles and interview witnesses. Earlier that evening, deputies had responded to a call about a suicidal 79-year-old man, resulting in a separate shooting that left the man dead. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued condolences, highlighting the dangers law-enforcement officers face daily.

Why it matters

The deaths underscore the risks officers face and raise questions about driver behavior and road safety during emergency responses.
