Brewers pitcher Dustin May leaves game after being struck by AJ Ewing's line drive
Milwaukee’s starter Dustin May was forced out after a first-inning line drive from New York’s AJ Ewing hit him in the shoulder, ending his appearance after a single pitch.
During the first inning of the Brewers’ visit to New York, right-hander Dustin May was hit by a line drive off AJ Ewing’s bat that traveled around 105 mph and struck his right shoulder/armpit. Although May tried to stay in the game, he was visibly in pain and, after a brief warm-up, left the field having delivered only one pitch. The incident occurred at Citi Field, and May entered the matchup with a 6-8 win-loss record and a 4.57 ERA, the best among the league’s pitchers at the time of his acquisition from the Cardinals.
His sudden departure leaves Milwaukee to rely on its bullpen for the rest of the night. The hit was described as a “scary scene” by on-field observers.
Why it matters
