BRICS pledges cooperation on peaceful space tech and vows to curb an arms race in orbit

During the New Delhi Declaration 2026, the BRICS bloc endorsed the continued peaceful exploitation of space technologies and pledged to work against an arms race in outer space (PAROS). Leaders highlighted the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation, noting its role in tackling worldwide issues and promoting socio-economic growth. The statement urged the adoption of a multilateral legal framework to prevent weaponisation of space objects and called for confidence-building measures and universal norms.

A recent gathering of BRICS heads of space agencies in Bengaluru stressed the importance of space-debris mitigation for long-term sustainability. The declaration also welcomed progress on amending the RSSC agreement to include new space agencies and on drafting the terms of reference for a BRICS Space Council. Finally, it recognized the 2014 draft treaty on preventing weapons placement in space as a step toward broader cooperation.
