BRICS unveils plan for joint agro-input and genetic resource networks
BRICS members have drafted a framework to create shared networks for seeds, digital farming tools and genetic resources, aiming to boost climate-resilient agriculture.
Ahead of the upcoming summit, BRICS nations have outlined a comprehensive agricultural cooperation agenda that includes the creation of a BRICS AGRIN network to link seed banks, germplasm collections and agro-input markets across member states. A parallel Network of Centres of Excellence will support collaborative research on agro-ecology, natural farming and regenerative practices. A Digital Agriculture network will promote the deployment of AI-driven decision-support, geospatial intelligence, IoT monitoring and advanced analytics for farm management.
Additionally, a Global Forum on Farmers' Rights in Seed Systems will facilitate the documentation and exchange of traditional seed knowledge while addressing the balance between farmers' and plant breeders' rights. Collectively, the proposals aim to strengthen capacity, share technology and protect genetic resources, positioning BRICS as a collective force for climate-smart agriculture.
