BRIN unveils metal-organic framework gas system to double household LPG efficiency
BRIN head Arif Satria announced that the new ANG technology, based on metal-organic frameworks, could extend a typical LPG cylinder’s use from 10 to up to 25 days.
During the Energy Week 2026 conference in Jakarta, Arif Satria, head of BRIN, presented the ANG technology that uses metal-organic frameworks to markedly improve household gas usage. He explained that while a standard 3-kilogram LPG cylinder normally lasts about ten days, the new system could keep a home supplied for twenty to twenty-five days, representing a 1.5-to-2-fold efficiency gain. The research is being carried out in partnership with Japanese expert Susumu Kitagawa at a joint laboratory in Serpong, South Tangerang, with a target commercial release in 2027.
Satria linked the project to national objectives of energy sovereignty and reducing reliance on imported fuels. Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto endorsed the effort, noting that strong research, talent, and industry collaboration are essential for Indonesia to achieve energy independence and join developed nations. The development aligns with the country’s broader push into renewable sources such as solar, geothermal, wind, and bioenergy.
Why it matters
The technology could cut household LPG consumption and subsidies, boosting Indonesia’s energy self-sufficiency.
