Britain's Sonay Kartal becomes lowest-ranked WTA 1000 finalist in Wuhan
Ranked No. 170, Sonay Kartal defeated Jelena Ostapenko to book a spot in the Wuhan Open final, the lowest-ranked appearance in a WTA 1000 tournament.
Sonay Kartal entered the Wuhan Open ranked 170 after a six-month layoff due to a back injury, yet she quickly amassed wins over top players including world No. 6 Elina Svitolina, Olympic champion Belinda Bencic and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini. In the semi-final she faced former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, trailing in both sets before rallying to capture two tie-breaks 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5) and saving six set points over a two-hour battle.
This performance makes Kartal the lowest-ranked finalist in a WTA 1000 event since the tier's inception in 2009. Her only previous title came at a WTA 250 tournament in Monastir two years ago. The upcoming final will pit her against either six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek or French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska, both Poles. Kartal described the win as one of the toughest and most mentally rewarding matches of her career.
Why it matters
Kartal's breakthrough shows how a low-ranked player can overcome injury and defeat top stars in a premier tennis event.
