British climber falls 200 feet near summit of Spain's Torre Cerredo
A 28-year-old British mountaineer fell about 200 ft from Torre Cerredo in northern Spain and was later confirmed dead.
A British climber, 28, slipped roughly 200 ft from the slopes of Torre Cerredo, the tallest summit in the Picos de Europa and Cantabrian Mountains. The fall happened when he was within about 65 ft of the summit, according to one outlet's reports. Authorities were first notified at 1:27 pm, and a rescue doctor was dispatched to determine the victim's condition.
The doctor confirmed the death at 2:18 pm, after which firefighters guarded the body until a Civil Guard helicopter arrived at 3:28 pm. The helicopter, carrying mountain-search experts, winched the remains and recovered his belongings, which were then flown to La Morgal, a regional emergency services hub near Oviedo and Gijón.
