British commandos train on German submarine during massive NATO drill
UK commandos rode atop a German U-boat in a large-scale exercise off Scotland, involving more than 2,000 allied personnel.
During the Strike Warrior 26 exercise, British commandos climbed onto a German submarine off the north coast of Scotland, marking the first joint deployment of specialist UK commando elements since Afghanistan. The drill, held at Cape Wrath, brought together over 2,000 personnel from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Norway and the United States for a comprehensive rehearsal of crisis-response missions in the High North and North Atlantic.
Members of 148 Battery Commando Forward Observation Battery launched inflatable raiding boats, established a cliff-side observation post and coordinated naval gunfire from the Portuguese warship NRP Dom Francisco de Almeida onto simulated enemy targets. The exercise also covered amphibious assaults, boarding operations, intelligence gathering, logistics, maritime security and anti-submarine tactics. In total, eight warships and 19 aircraft are participating, with the exercise running from September 28 through the coming Friday.
Why it matters
The drill showcases NATO allies' ability to coordinate complex maritime and special-operations missions in the strategically vital North Atlantic.
