British forces in Estonia bolster NATO deterrence, says Estonian foreign minister

Estonia’s foreign minister Margus Tsahkna said British troops in Estonia are a key element of NATO’s deterrence and praised the UK’s readiness to stand with Estonian forces.

Estonia’s foreign minister Margus Tsahkna told British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband that the British contingent in Estonia forms a vital part of NATO’s deterrence strategy. He praised the United Kingdom’s willingness to fight alongside Estonian troops and cited daily joint training as a clear signal to Russia. The discussion covered Ukraine’s defence needs, sanctions on Russia, and the need for stronger European security measures.

Tsahkna also referenced the NATO battlegroup led by the UK at Tapa and the Joint Expeditionary Force’s role in Baltic Sea security. Plans for the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Estonia next January were mentioned as part of post-war assistance. The minister will continue talks on European security at the GZERO Summit and with the RUSI think tank.

Why it matters

The presence of British troops in Estonia reinforces NATO’s eastern flank and signals continued Western support for Ukraine against Russian aggression.
