British Heart Foundation to shut 150 stores after reporting a £3.3m loss
The British Heart Foundation announced a £3.3 million retail loss and will close about 150 shops over the next two years to stay financially viable.
The British Heart Foundation’s 2025-26 annual report disclosed a £3.3 million loss in its retail operations, a reversal from a £3.6 million profit the year before. Citing rising operating costs and changing donation patterns, the charity will phase out around 150 shops over the next two financial years, beginning with a June 2026 announcement. At the end of March 2026 the network comprised 651 stores, including 470 clothing outlets and 181 home-goods locations, with 11 new shops opened and 25 closed earlier in the year.
The proposed closures are intended to keep the retail arm financially sustainable and ensure continued funding for research, care and support programmes. Charmaine Griffiths, the BHF chief executive, highlighted the difficulty of the decision but stressed its importance for the charity’s mission. A detailed list of the stores slated for closure spans numerous towns and cities across England, Scotland and Wales.
Why it matters
The closures will affect thousands of volunteers and donors while reshaping a major source of funding for heart disease research.
