British man charged with aiding Russian military intelligence under National Security Act
Joshua Cammidge, 31, has been charged with assisting Russia's GRU Volunteer Corps after a counter-terrorism investigation.
Metropolitan Police announced that 31-year-old Joshua Cammidge was charged with offences under the National Security Act for allegedly liaising with a member of the GRU Volunteer Corps, a group linked to Russia’s military intelligence. Cammidge was first arrested on 4 September in Swindon by Counter Terrorism Policing London officers, assisted by Wiltshire Police, and taken to a London station, with searches carried out at a second Swindon address.
He was re-arrested the following day on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service and subsequently charged with both assistance and preparatory conduct under sections 3 and 18 of the 2023 Act. Crown prosecutors, led by Frank Ferguson, said sufficient evidence exists and the case serves the public interest. Cammidge is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 10 September, and officials warned against publishing material that could prejudice the trial.
