British man loses citizenship bid after MI5 labels him Islamist terror threat

J4, a British man, failed to overturn the loss of his UK citizenship after MI5 classified his WhatsApp remarks about attacking Danish politician Rasmus Paludan as an Islamist terror threat.

J4, a former delivery driver, sought to regain his British citizenship after it was revoked on security grounds. MI5 had flagged his WhatsApp exchange in which he said he would "attack that kuffar" if Rasmus Paludan, a Danish hard-right politician, burned a Koran in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The Crown Prosecution Service declined to prosecute and his bail conditions were removed, but the security service concluded the remarks showed a willingness to commit Islamist terrorist violence.

The Home Office used its powers to strip him of nationality, and the Special Immigration Appeals Commission affirmed the decision despite J4’s claim that he merely spoke provocatively. Judges noted his messages were a "plain inference" of intent to attack, and the tribunal dismissed his appeal, also noting he had misled his solicitor. His family remains in the UK under a court-ordered anonymity for safety, and the case mirrors earlier citizenship removals such as that of Shamima Begum.

Why it matters

The case illustrates how UK authorities can revoke citizenship on security grounds, impacting individual rights and immigration policy.
