British nationals lead arrests in KLIA drug mule crackdown, over 2,500 kg seized

Authorities at Kuala Lumpur International Airport recorded 77 drug-mule cases, arresting 93 people and confiscating about 2,526 kg of narcotics worth roughly RM202.76 million.

From January through October 15, Kuala Lumpur International Airport saw 77 investigations into drug-mule networks, resulting in 93 arrests, according to Datuk Hussein Omar Khan of the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department. The seized contraband totaled 2,526.28 kg and was valued at an estimated RM202.76 million, comprising mainly cannabis (2,407.27 kg) along with smaller amounts of methamphetamine, ketamine, cocaine and a ketamine-cannabis blend.

British citizens formed the biggest group of detainees, with 26 arrests, while Malaysians, Singaporeans, French and Japanese nationals followed. The cases were uncovered through joint efforts of the Aviation Security Auxiliary Police, the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency, and various police divisions, including follow-up operations that recovered an additional 571.59 kg of cannabis flowers. Officials urged the public to be wary of dubious job offers involving luggage transport and to report suspicious activities.

Why it matters

The bust highlights extensive international drug-smuggling networks using KLIA and underscores the need for vigilance against mule recruitment schemes.
