British Paratrooper Killed in Ukrainian Explosion During Defensive Test
Lance Corporal George Hooley, a 28-year-old Parachute Regiment soldier, died after an explosion while observing a Ukrainian defensive-capability test in December 2025.
A senior coroner in Oxfordshire ruled that Lance Corporal George Hooley, 28, of the Parachute Regiment, was killed by an explosion while observing Ukrainian troops test a new defensive capability on 6 December 2025, away from active combat zones. He was treated on site, taken to two hospitals in Kyiv, and died on 9 December despite surgery. The inquest, conducted in writing and held behind closed doors at the family's request, relied on limited evidence and statements from fellow soldiers, British Army doctors, and Ukrainian documents, finding no suspicious circumstances.
The Ministry of Defence called the death a tragic accident, noting that only a small number of British personnel are deployed in Ukraine for diplomatic security and support. Hooley, who joined the army in 2015 and earned top honors in training, had previously served in Afghanistan, Africa and Eastern Europe and was due for promotion. Tributes highlighted his professionalism and the impact he had on his comrades.
