British Prime Minister Andy Burnham visits Kyiv, plays guitar and tours bombed mall

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham made his inaugural foreign visit to Kyiv on August 24, coinciding with Ukraine’s Independence Day and a summit of nations backing Kyiv amid Russia’s fifth-year invasion. While in the capital, Burnham stopped beside a Ukrainian soldier in a sound-proofed vehicle to play a song by The Smiths, noting that music can raise spirits on the front line. He then toured a shopping centre that had been razed by a Russian strike in May, interacting with residents and allowing selfies.

In a joint appearance with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Burnham affirmed that Britain will sustain its defence support for Ukraine and drew a parallel between the current war and the Allies’ fight against Nazi Germany. The Russian Kremlin responded on the same day, alleging that Britain is prolonging the war by providing missile technology. The visit underscored Britain’s visible diplomatic backing as the conflict intensifies.
